Route description

Climbing Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route is a breathtaking adventure that combines stunning scenery with a challenging ascent to the “Roof of Africa.” The Lemosho Route is renowned for its panoramic vistas and diverse landscapes, offering trekkers a unique and less-traveled path to Uhuru Peak. Beginning on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, the journey unfolds through lush rainforests, sprawling heath and moorland, and otherworldly alpine deserts.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route typically follows a carefully planned itinerary to allow for proper acclimatization and maximize the chances of reaching the summit. Here is a sample schedule for a typical Lemosho Route climb, considering a 7-day ascent:

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

Arrive in Moshi, Tanzania.Airport.
Meet with trekking team for a briefing.
Rest and prepare for the climb.

Day 2: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa (2,650m/8,690ft)

Drive to the Lemosho Gate for registration.
Begin the trek through the rainforest.
Camp at Mti Mkubwa.

Day 3: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp (3,505m/11,500ft)

Hike through the rainforest and heath to the Shira Plateau.
Camp at Shira 1.

Day 4: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m/12,600ft)

Trek across the Shira Plateau.
Camp at Shira 2.

Day 5: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (3,960m/12,990ft)

Ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m/15,190ft) for acclimatization.
Descend to Barranco Camp for overnight.

Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m/13,200ft)

Traverse the Barranco Wall.
Camp at Karanga.

Day 7: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m/15,220ft)

Ascend to Barafu Camp, the base for the summit push.
Rest and prepare for the summit night.

Day 8: Summit Day - Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft) and descent to Mweka Camp (3,080m/10,105ft)

Start the summit attempt around midnight.
Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise.
Descend to Mweka Camp for overnight.

Day 9: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate.
Transfer back to Moshi for celebration and rest.
